Welcome to the

The Camrose Genealogy Society would like to cordially invite you to their
regular meetings , held every 2nd thursday of each month at the Camrose
Public Library, 7.30 pm.
The
County of Camrose is approximately 95 kilometers long, running north to
south, and 60 kilometers wide at it's widest point running west to east.
The Battle river flows through the center of the county. Battle River (
Notikiwin Seppe in Cree) was named after a long time war between the Cree
and Blackfoot bands over the hunting area. Actual documented settlement
of the area wasn't established until about 1881, when Father Beillevaire
was asked to start a mission along the south side of the Battle river.
He named this settlement Duhamel, after Archbishop Duhamel of Ottawa. Metis'
families had begun settlement as early as 1870 in Duhamel and in the valley
of Battle River supplying Fort Edmonton with buffalo meat and supplies
with their RedRiver carts along side their cousins, the Cree and Saulteaux
Bands.
Prior to 1870, the area west
of Ontario was 'owned on paper' by the Hudson's Bay Company, and between
1670 - 1870, was known as Rupert's Land. The people of the Camrose County
during this era were usually either from the Blackfoot or Cree Tribes,
the latter ofwhich were the main trader's and guides for the fur traders
and explorers through our county. With the continuing fur trade during this
time, many Metis' families advanced in this area with the 'A La Facon du
pays ' marriages of the fur traders, which complimented the growing population
of the French, Scottish, English, and Irish Metis' from Manitoba moving
westward with the fur trade. The 'Rupert's Land ' peoples' Metis' surnames
can still be found in our county today.
The County of Camrose includes
