African American Vital Records

In an effort to enhance the research potential of African Americans, we are accepting vital records. The records may be in the form of Death Certificates, Birth Certificates and Marriages. The records may be in the form of  transcriptions or by using the submission forms that are provided. If you do not have time or would prefer to have the certificate transcribed, please contact us. Submission forms can be found on the menu above or on State pages

In order to protect the privacy of living persons the following policy will be enforced

*** All submitted records must be of African Americans

*** Enter information exactly as it appears on the death certificate.

*** If no information is listed and the field is a required field, enter "unk" or a dash ( - ) in the box. 

*** All records will be listed on the State page that issue the record.

*** Scanned copies of the certificates are not mandatory but are requested.  

*** Submitter's email address will not be shown.

Birth Certificates: Since the African American Griots project covers all 50 States and Canada and find it impossible to know all of the laws pertaining to the release of records pertaining to living individuals, therefore birth certificates will not be accepted UNLESS they are MORE THAN 100 years old. When a birth certificate is submitted it must be of an African American who is deceased.

Marriage Certificates: Only marriage certificates prior to 1929 will be accepted. When submitting the marriage record, please do not submit records for anyone that is living. At this time a marriage submission form is not available. Only transcriptions and scanned copies for transcribing are being accepted.
