This Grim Cemetery Tombstone list was contributed by Gloria Woodruff, a resident and former librarian of Ulysses, NE.  Additional notes provided by Barbara Ryan-Baxter. Additional notes submitted by Donna Ellis & Marilyn Ramsay.

Grim Cem. Directions: From 2nd and "G" street in Ulysses, Nebraska (north side), take spur 12-C (paved) one mile east and turn left (north) on "K" road 2 1/2 miles on the right hand side. There is an "Historical Cemetery" marker on 12-C spur, put there by NE State Dept. of Roads  in 1986.

Grim Cem. History: Alexander and Amanda Zimmerman Grim, (a civil war veteran) deeded the SW corner NW1/4 of sec. 11-13-2 " to be a burial ground forever, for no other use" for the Grim Cemetery on August 18, 1875. It is a Pioneer Cemetery with Civil War Veterans, and possibly some Indian graves. It was left unattended for years, and was overgrown and vandalized.  Loran and Grace M. (White) Hoeft of Ulysses, Ne., undertook the huge clean up process.  On July 7, 1997, a reorganization took place at the Ulysses community Hall.  Officers were elected. a new constitution was made and filed with the Butler Co. Clerk at David City, NE.  The annual meetings are held on the first Monday of July at the Community Hall in Ulysses. Donations of mowing and cash have kept the Cemetery in good condition. A new gate was built and added, and a fence is planned, when funds are sufficient.

Grim Cemetery Board members [2000] are: Grace M. Hoeft ([email protected]), President, Darrell Shipley, vice-president, Secretary Lucy Wynegar, Treasurer De Lores Hood, and member at large, Harold Heins.

Additional Notes by Barbara Ryan-Baxter

May 2001
I was so pleased and thankful to find the Grim Cemetery online where so many of my family is buried. My gr-gr-gr grandparents, Thomas Jefferson ZIMMERMAN (T. J. on the tombstone) b. 1808, and I believe it is his wife, Rebecca (LOWMAN) ZIMMERMAN found there along with members of my COMBS, THURMAN
and DARNELL families. T.J. and Rebecca's daughter, Amanda, married Alexander GRIM. In the transcription it has T. J., d. 21 Jan 1885, age 77 yr 11 mo 22 da and then Rebecca, dau of T. J., 3 Aug 1888, age 20 yr 9 mo 12 da.  Per family history, Rebecca (Lowman), wife of Thomas Jefferson ZIMMERMAN, was born on 21 October 1812 and died on 3 August 1888 and buried in the Grim Cemetery. Rebecca would have been 76 years of age at the time of her death. If Rebecca is a dau of T.J. he would have been 59 years of age at the time of her birth in 1867, which is possible, but my records show their last daughter, my gr-gr grandmother, Rachel Ann, was born in 1844. I believe that the Rebecca beneath T.J. is actually his wife, Rebecca. I have searched my Family Tree Maker for any ZIMMERMAN who would have been abt age 21 in August of 1888 and cannot find any who would qualify.

Eddie DARNELL is the son of Sumner William DARNELL and Rachel Ann (ZIMMERMAN, dau. of T.J. and Rebecca and sister to Amanda {ZIMMERMAN} GRIM). He was born 24 April 1874, died 10 September 1875.

My grandmother, Catherine Gertrude COMBS, was born in Ulysses on 21 November 1887 to William Franklin COMBS and Martha Jane (DARNELL). Per William's obituary: "In the spring of 1878 he came to Butler County and worked for George L. Smith of Ulysses. The following fall he entered employ of I. E. Doty doing railroad construction work. He became a permanent resident of Butler County in 1880. After marrying Martha J. Darnell in 1880 they moved to a farm in the Ulysses vicinity, lived there for 30 years and raised their family of four boys and three girls. After retiring from farm work in November 1916 they moved to David City."
