Martha Jane 1858-1935
Martha Jane (PARNELL) SHIRK GIBSON was born in Princeville, Peoria County, IL on March 11,
1858, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (BEST) PARNELL. After her father's death, her
mother and siblings moved to the Bone Creek area of Butler County, NE. Martha
("Matty") married Oliver W. SHIRK (son of Jacob and Amelia SHIRK) on October
8th, 1873. They had one daughter named, Amelia SHIRK. Oliver was a minister for the Church
of the Brethren in the Bone Creek area. They moved to IA where Oliver died. Martha and
Amelia returned to Bone Creek area. Martha married James Alonzo GIBSON (son of James Ham
and Mary Ann (LEMON) GIBSON) of Holt County, NE on October 28, 1886. (This information
about James A. Gibson provided by Terri Nielson). James and Martha moved to Missouri where
James drowned on July 4, 1896 and is buried in Dade County, MO. James and Martha had the
following children: Elva Chestina (MECK), Vern Washington, Ethel (ALDRICH), James Lester,
and
Clifford Lafayette. Martha died in her home on January 26, 1935.

Mary Elizabeth Manning is the daughter, seventh child of Thomas and Catherine
(Best) Parnell. She was born March 7, 1860 in Princeville, Peoria County, IL. After
Thomas' death, her mother and siblings moved to Bone Creek, Butler County, NE. She married
Oscar Green Manning on July 4, 1880. Mary had three children, Maude (6/1881 never
married), Suel Benton (9/1886) and Marshall (1883, died in 1884). Mary survived all her
siblings dying on September 4, 1942 in David City, NE. She was an Eastern Star and
belonged to the Christian Church.

Oscar G. Manning

Oscar Green Manning was the son of Marshall and Caroline Manning born on January
15, 1860 in Princeton, MO. He came to NE in 1870 with his parents and siblings. He married
Mary Elizabeth Parnell on July 4, 1880. They had three children, Suel Benton, Maude, and
Marshall. He was in the merchantile business and real estate for many years, and quite
weathy. He was on the David City Council, a Mason, and a volunteer fire fighter. He died
February 22, 1935 in David City, NE.

are listed in Crete, Saline County, NE; however, they are not there in 1910 or 1920.

Amelia
("Millie") SHIRK was the daughter of Oliver W. and Martha Jane (PARNELL) SHIRK.
She was born in Octavia on 8/27/1875. When her father became ill, her mother and her moved
to IA to be near her grandparents. Her father died in 1881. When she was an adolescent she
was caught with her stepfather's brother, Omar, in a blizzard in 1888. The horse, and Omar
died. Amelia received severe frostbite, and had to recover for several months afterwards.
Her mother remarried James A. GIBSON, and they moved to MO. After his drowning in 1896,
Amelia and her family returned to Octavia, where Amelia helped her mother support and care
for the GIBSON children. Millie and her mother, Martha, were seamstresses. Amelia died in
Columbus, NE on May 20, 1978 at the age of 102. [probably buried on May 23, 1878]

1867 and was Superintendent of first Sunday School in Butler County. Sipka
Vanderkolk married Amelia Parnell (Nov. 17, 1878) and they had four children. Sipka and
his sisters were very involved with the church and the schools in the area. He is listed
in the 1890 Gazetteer Farmer's Directory.

was the daughter of Sipke and Amelia (PARNELL) VANDERKOLK, born in Butler County. She
married William H. Maloney and had five children, Lucile A, James I., Edith, Zella and
George W. She and her family moved to South Dakota with her brother Vigor Vanderkolk and
his wife, Emma Sempkin, where they purchased Federal Land. After her death, her remains
were brought back to NE.

DeHaan was born in Holland, and came to America with her husband William VANDERKOLK and
some of her children. They had eight children: Vigoe, Hoeke, Sipke, Tabitha, Hoeke, Adah,
Katie, and possibly Winifred.
Margaret died in Pella, IA, and her remains were moved to NE so she could be buried with
the rest of her family.

He came to America in 1848 with his wife Margaret DeHaan to Pella, IA. After Margaret's

Margaret's remains to NE. They had eight children.

moved the family to Butler County, NE in 1867. She married James Varnum WOOD about 1874 in
NE. She had two children: Merta and Vieger. She died from an infection after the birth of
her last child, Merta.

11, ME, infantry, enlisted August 2, 1862, discharged May 1865, 2 years, 10 months.
Disability was "uncholosis of left elbow, and chronic bronchitis."
Married Adah VANDERKOLK, Tabitha VANDERKOLK, and Etta (possibly VANDERKOLK). James lived
in Olive Precinct in 1880. He is listed in the 1890 Gazetteer Farmer Directory as
living in David City. He had eight children.
