Located on private property in section 32 of Clay Township, northeastern Harrison County. From Interstate 35 at Eagleville, go east on route N to Blythdale. Turn north on route T to route UU. Turn right (east) on route UU to the intersection with route O. Turn left (north) on route O to the first gravel cross road and turn left (west). Follow the gravel road west to the home on the right. The graveyard is on the crest of a hill approximately 300 yards north of this home and 200 yards east of the road. It cannot be seen from the road. It is in very poor condition with only a few stones still visible. It is fenced but is not maintained.

A Short History of the Downey Cemetery:

To call it a "cemetery" is stretching the definition of the word. Technically, it is a "community" or family graveyard which was common in the area through the mid to late 1800s. Information indicates that the first burial was that of James C. Graham who died in 1859 at the age of 23. Twenty to twenty-five burials followed, with the last recorded in 1902. Most of those buried at Downey are members of the Downey family and children of individuals who lived in the area.

NOTE: The following information was gathered and compiled from various sources including Harrison County Census Records, Marriage Records, Death Records, old newspapers of Harrison County, Civil War Service Records and other sources available at the Harrison County Genealogy Library in Bethany, Missouri. The research was conducted and the narrative compiled by Phil Stewart. No claims are made that it is "all inclusive" or 100 percent accurate.
