A Short History of the Downey Cemetery:
To call it a "cemetery" is stretching the definition of the word. Technically, it is a "community" or family graveyard which was common in the area through the mid to late 1800s. Information indicates that the first burial was that of James C. Graham who died in 1859 at the age of 23. Twenty to twenty-five burials followed, with the last recorded in 1902. Most of those buried at Downey are members of the Downey family and children of individuals who lived in the area.
NOTE: The following information was gathered and compiled from various sources including Harrison County Census Records, Marriage Records, Death Records, old newspapers of Harrison County, Civil War Service Records and other sources available at the Harrison County Genealogy Library in Bethany, Missouri. The research was conducted and the narrative compiled by Phil Stewart. No claims are made that it is "all inclusive" or 100 percent accurate.
