Early Marriage Records of Lyon County, KS Vol.1 - FHGS

EARLY MARRIAGE RECORDS OF

LYON COUNTY, KANSAS

Volume 1 1885 - 1887

In the late 1800's and early 1900's vital records in Kansas were kept on a county basis. It was not required by the State of Kansas until July 1911. The vital records, including marriages, for Lyon County were recorded in three oversized books. In addition, the Clerk of the District Court maintained issuance of marriage license and record of the marriage, so some marriage records are listed in both sources.

The first volume contains marriages in Lyon County between October 25, 1885 to July 1, 1887. The record for each marriage can contain the following information: For the bride, her name, maiden name, place of residence, age at next birthday, race/color, place of birth, her father's name, her mother's maiden name, and number of marriages; For the groom, his name, place of residence, occupation, age next birthday, race/color, place of birth, his father's name, his mother's date of birth and number of marriages; date of marriage, where married witnesses, person who certified the marriage, date of return, date return registered, name of anyone making affidavit, and who gave consent.

The complete transcription for all these is in a publication "Early Marriage Records of Lyon County, Kansas Volume 1" and is available for purchase from the Flint Hills Genealogical Society for $12.00, plus $3.00 postage. Kansas residents add $.77 sales tax. (Visit our Publication Web Site for more information). A copy of the page from the publication containing a specific record is available from FHGS for $1.00 donation plus a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

A copy of the page from the actual record book is available from The Lyon County Historical Society, 225 E. Sixth, Emporia, KS 66801 OR the Flint Hills Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 555, Emporia, KS 66801. Please send a donation (to cover copy fees and researchers time) plus a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope). Please be specific in your request as to the type of record you are requesting (marriage from Volume 1), name of groom, name of bride and date of marriage.

NOTE: In order to make these records useful to family researchers in this format, if the date of marriage was not recorded, but available from the Lyon County Marriage License/Record, it has been noted in parenthesis. It is also known that some of the names are not spelled accurately so check all possibilities. The only way to insure the actual information from the record is to obtain a copy as noted above.

They are in surname order by GROOM. You will have to visit both sites in order to view all of them.
