Weiss Private Burial Plot

Goshen Twp Section 22
Near Atalissa
This history and transcription of Weiss Cemetery was prepared by Jeff Kaufmann of Wilton Iowa and submitted for our use in September 2002.  It is far more detailed than the original listing we had from the old WPA records and we thank Jeff for his time and efforts to record this information.  The cataloging for this project was accomplished by Margaret and Ernest Marolf, grandchildren of  Philip and Rosina Weiss.

The Weiss Cemetery is a burial ground for George Weiss, Elizabeth Fuhr Weiss, and their descendants.  George was one of eleven children of Philip (1784-1848) and Barbara (1802-1858) Weiss.  The family settled in Rock Island County, Illinois after leaving the Wurttemburg area of Germany in 1848.  (Philip died in St. Louis before reaching Rock Island County).

In 1876, George, Elizabeth and their family moved to Goshen Township, Muscatine County Iowa. A plot of ground was set aside on their farm in Section 22 for a cemetery.  Besides George and Elizabeth, seven of their children (Mary Spigler, Margaret Spigler, Philip, Louisa, John, Clara and Emma) are buried here.  Five of their children (Catherine Stemm, Christian, Valentine, Lydia Werth and Barbara Timm) are buried elsewhere.

The George and Elizabeth Weiss farm was eventually deeded to the Zion Lutheran Church in Atalissa.  The Weiss cemetery is located in the SW 1/4 of Section 22 of Goshen Township.  If travelling on Highway 6, turn south on Kelly Avenue just west of Atalissa.  Turn west on 140th Street until you reach a long farm lane at 1919-140th Street.  This lane travels north and then west for 6/10th of a mile, eventually ending at the cemetery.

Margaret and Ernest Marolf, grandchildren of Philip and Rosina Weiss, cataloged the cemetery.  The cemetery is carefully mowed and maintained.  A remote yet beautiful resting place.
