For many years the black top road to Conesville was known as County Road C. It has been renumbered to G28. On this road, close to Legler's Corner, that two neglected cemeteries are found.
One is just north of the road and was once a well kept plot with some large stones north of the road, some surrounded with ornamental iron fences. Of late years, the farm stock has been allowed to roam through and the weeds have grown very high.
Oldest graves were marked with the years 1851 and 1853. We have heard this cemetery referred to as the Vanatta Cemetery but wondered if it could have been a McGrew farm. Learned in an old atlas that an S. Houtz owned land but a J. M. McGrew was a neighbor. The Vanatta families lived south and east. The markers are scattered and hard to find but the following were some that were legible.
At that time the cemetery had been recently mowed, veteran flags were on some of the graves and the livestock (llamas--yes llamas!) has now been confined to the neighboring property. There are many illegible and broken stones within the cemetery, and clearly stones are missing. We found several markers not listed previously. We also did not find several markers which were on the WPA or other records. These may be down and overgrown, but we did not have time to probe for them during our rewalk. This pioneer cemetery would be a prime candidate for a restoration project.
