LOST LANGUAGE TOUR

Thomaston, GA, February 22, 2012 - Author and cemetery symbolism expert and lecturer Minda Powers-Douglas of Illinois is flying out to Thomaston to present a program on the "Art of the American Cemetery: Symbolism & Gravestone Rubbing" where participants discover the art and symbolism of our cemeteries. Find out how you can decode gravestone information no matter what the condition of the stone. You'll also learn safe gravestone rubbing techniques so that you can take a piece of cemetery history home with you. If you're interested in history, art, genealogy or our "museums on the lawns," you won't want to miss this. The program is free!

Tombstone.Glenwood

Director of the Thomaston-Upson Archives, Penny Cliff, and Upson Lee High School senior Jonathan Williams have created a tour guide of the symbols in Glenwood Cemetery. The tour guide will be used in Glenwood after the program. Penny and Jonathan will be on hand to share stories and guide participants to "lost language" headstones. The brochures with the symbolism can be used in any cemetery with Victorian era headstones (1830-1918). The Thomaston-Upson Archives and Upson Historical Society are able to sponsor this event because of a generous grant from the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly. "Lost Language and Stories of Glenwood Cemetery" will be held two times on Saturday, March 17. The first program is at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a tour of Glenwood Cemetery. A second presentation is from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. and a tour of Glenwood Cemetery. We will meet at the Thomaston-Upson Archives at 301 S. Center Street, Thomaston, GA.

If you wish to participate in gravestone rubbing after the program, please bring a white cotton sheet that can be cut up. To sign up for the 10:00 a.m. or 1:15 p.m. presentations please call the archives at (706) 646-2437.

Upson County, Georgia History

Before the "Treaty of 1821", the land between the Ocmulgee and Flint Rivers belonged to the Creek Indians. After the treaty this land was distributed by lottery , and the counties of Dooly, Monroe, Houston, Henry, and Fayette were formed.

Upson County was created in 1824 from parts of the original counties of Monroe and Houston. Many of the early deeds of Upson County contain the phrase "...of formerly Monroe now Upson County" or "...of formerly Houston now Upson County". Roughly speaking, the northern half of Upson was created from Monroe and the southern half from Houston County.
Upson County was named for one of Georgia's most successful lawyers, the Hon. Stephen Upson who died in August of 1824.
The County seat is Thomaston and was named for General Jett Thomas, famous in the War of 1812.
