Upson County, Georgia History
Before the "Treaty of 1821", the land between the
Ocmulgee and Flint Rivers belonged to the Creek Indians. After
the treaty this land was distributed by lottery , and the counties
of Dooly, Monroe, Houston, Henry, and Fayette were formed. Upson
County was created in 1824 from parts of the original counties
of Monroe and Houston. Many of the early deeds of Upson County
contain the phrase "...of formerly Monroe now Upson County"
or "...of formerly Houston now Upson County". Roughly
speaking, the northern half of Upson was created from Monroe and
the southern half from Houston County. Upson County was named
for one of Georgia's most successful lawyers, the Hon. Stephen
Upson who died in August of 1824. The County seat is Thomaston and was named for General Jett Thomas, famous in the War of 1812.
