Educational Programs

Each year the Society sponsors a Georgia History project for 8th graders. The three winners are awarded Savings Bonds courtesy of the local banks.

Historical Tours for school groups are also planned.

History

Peach County was created from parts of Houston and Macon Counties in 1924 and was named for the area's abundant peach crop. Prior to 1821 the area had been a part of the vast hunting grounds of the Creek Nation. Many of the first settlers were descendants of those Virginians and Carolinians who a century earlier had been attracted to Georgia.

Central of Georgia Railway and Connecting Lines by (Richard E. Prince) Many photos by Mr. Hugh Moss Comer. This Railroad goes through Peach County and was very important in the early history of the area.

Doctor Roger's Ordeal by Mr. Homer Avera, pharmacist who had Avera Drugs. Fiction. About a middle Georgia physician during the 1860's. Contains many references to accurate historical characters and events from Fort Valley to Savannah to Jefferson to Andersonville. Possibly the only copy of the book resides at Avera Drug Company in Fort Valley, and bears the hand-written inscription "property of Homer L. Avera".

A Story Untold by Thelma R. Brown. The story of African-American business leaders in Fort Valley and others "who were first to break barriers." The author's address is 280 Jones St. Fort Valley, Ga. 31030.
