White Rose

Welcome to Yorkshire, EnglandGenWeb Project

So you think you have ancestors from Yorkshire? There are lots of resources available to help you carry out further research. This page provides links to some of these resources.

Yorkshire is a "county" of England, in fact it is the largest county by area. In 1951 it had a population of 4.6 million.

Yorkshire (pre-1974) was divided into 3 "ridings" East, North and West, these are usually abbreviated as ERY, NRY and WRY.

Yorkshire is, of course, famous for its pudding. It is also featured on a number of popular TV shows: All Creatures Great and Small (James Herriot stories based around Thirsk, NRY), Heartbeat (based around Goathland, NRY) and Danziel and Pascoe (based in the WRY).

If you are new to genealogy and Family History it is strongly advised that you read the "newbie" guide on GENUKI.

Yorkshire Reference Sites

For general genealogical information on Yorkshire try GENUKI or Cyndi's List. The GENUKI Yorkshire site is particularly recommended. In particular it contains a "Where is it in Yorkshire" hyperlinked index and a detailed map of Yorkshire.

Civil Registration

There are 2, free, on-line Civil Registration (Birth, Marriage, Death) databases: FreeBMD is England-wide and is based on the General Registry Office (GRO) index and YorkshireBMD is based on local Registry Office indexes. Note that neither are complete. See also my quick guide to Civil Registration.

GENUKI provide a helpful index to the civil registration codes for East Yorkshire (and York), North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The GENUKI pages may also be accessed by my Yorkshire district breakdown for the post-1852 districts 9a (WRY - other), 9b (Leeds / Bradford), 9c (South WRY - Sheffield) and 9d (ERY and NRY). Between 1837 and 1851 the Yorkshire districts were represented by roman numerals i.e. 12 (XII), 13 (XIII) and 14 (XIV).
