Union Academy
Belleville, Jefferson County, New
York

A Brief History of the Academy
The Union Academy at Belleville grew from its humble beginnings in a blacksmith shop in 1805 to become one of the most prestigious schools in Jefferson County. Its student body not only reflected the culture of the “north country” but took on a broader national flavor as it drew students from throughout the United States and Canada. Our intent is to capture those students that were enrolled in the Academy rather than delve into its history. For a history of the Academy we encourage you to visit Leona’s site “Belleville, NY - History and Genealogy”.
The Student Body
Currently the UAB collection consists of Graduates as presented in Tom Trumper’s “Old Union 1824-1904” and class rosters spanning the period 1860 to 1902. In addition to students, the collection now includes faculty, staff, and trustees. Along with the huge gaps in the information for the 1860-1902 timeframe, we have been unable to locate any rosters for school years prior to 1860.
The UAB Collection
The collection is viewable in three ways: Name search, Graduates/Term Year, or by the first letter of the surname. Currently the collection contains approximately 1,500 students. A student may appear numerous times as no attempt is made to track individual students from year to year. There are no surnames beginning with the letter X.
