1800 Federal Census
Portions of Oneida County, New York
The 1800 Federal Census was the last census taken prior to the establishment of Jefferson County (1805). In 1800 what was to become Jefferson County was the northern portion of Oneida County (the area south and west of the Black River) and the area known as Castorland (which included Penet Square) located north and east of the Black River.
At the time of the 1800 Census only three towns were apparently in existence: Watertown, Champion and Henderson. These Towns were located in the northern portion of Oneida County. As can be seen on the map, all three were located south of the Black River. There also appears to be a lack of population centers north of the Black River. The census for this portion of the state appears to only include the Towns of Watertown and Champion. Additionally we have been unable to locate any census data for what was to become the northern portion of the county prior to 1810.

Currently census data is only available for the Towns of Watertown and Champion. As time permits this will be expanded to include a greater portion of the surrounding Towns as portions were eventually encompassed by Jefferson County.
Enumerators were asked to include the following
groups:
- Name of head of household,
- Free white males (WM): age groups of 0-10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45
and older,
- Free white females (WF): age groups of 0-10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45,
45 and older.
- Number of other free persons except Indians not taxed (not shown
below),
- Number of slaves (not shown below),
- Town / District and County of residence.
Note: ID numbers were not included on the original census and are for reference only. Data is sorted exactly as it was in the original census.
