Cemetery Art and Symbols

Partion of a monument from Oakwood Cemetery

Throughout the ages gravestones and monuments have been engraved with symbols that depict aspects of the deceased's live. Understanding those symbols provide a clue to the individuals religious beliefs, organization membership, or events that were significant during their life. The carving of symbols varies tremendously from the nearly mass produced that exists today to the extremely detailed carvings by artisans of the past.

To fully understand the meaning of the symbols and to preserve the art created by stone carvers, each symbol will ideally consist of line drawings, photographs of the symbol, an explanation of it's meaning, and where applicable the original symbol that was the model for the stone carving.
